5 Things You Didn’t Know About Ice Cream

In 1984, President Ronald Reagan signed into law the designation of July as “National Ice Cream Month,” and specifically the third Sunday in July (July 19 this year) as “National Ice Cream Day” with this proclamation:

Ice cream is a nutritious and wholesome food, enjoyed by over ninety percent of the people in the United States. It enjoys a reputation as the perfect dessert and snack food. Over eight hundred and eighty-seven million gallons of ice cream were consumed in the United States in 1983.

The ice cream industry generates approximately $3.5 billion in annual sales and provides jobs for thousands of citizens. Indeed, nearly ten percent of all the milk produced by the United States dairy farmers is used to produce ice cream, thereby contributing substantially to the economic well-being of the Nation’s dairy industry.

The Congress, by Senate Joint Resolution 298, has designated July 1984 as “National Ice Cream Month,” and July 15, 1984, as “National Ice Cream Day,” and authorized and requested the President to issue a proclamation in observance of these events.

Now, Therefore, I, Ronald Reagan, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim July 1984 as National Ice Cream Month and July 15, 1984, as National Ice Cream Day, and I call upon the people of the United States to observe these events with appropriate ceremonies and activities.

In Witness Whereof I have hereunto set my hand this ninth day of July, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and eightyfour, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and ninth.

And why not? As President Reagan said, “Ice cream is a nutritious and wholesome food.” And, we think that it certainly can be!

Ice Cream is a Proven Comfort Food

Ice cream has been a proven comfort food in times of angst…time and time again. A study of the U.S. ice cream industry reported in 2009 that the industry blossomed through the Great Depression after the 1929 stock market crash and became a niche household happening after World War II. The current national recession has not affected the ice cream industry with sales increasing over 20 percent from the summer of 2008.

Americans Consume the Most

The largest worldwide consumption of ice cream is in United States. There, one average person consumes 48 pints of ice cream per year. Believe it or not, just because American’s consume around 48 pints of ice cream and more than 90% of American households eat ice cream, it’s not our favorite dessert. What is? The humble cookie.

It’s Healthy

Did we just say that? Yes, we did. Although ice cream is a dessert that, in large quantities, can really make weight gain inevitable. If it’s eaten in moderation, ice cream can actually be beneficial to your health. Here’s why: ice cream is packed full of Vitamin D and calcium, two nutrients essential for healthy, strong bones. A half a cup is all you need, so don’t use this as an excuse to overindulge. That said, just remember that ice cream loaded with plenty of toppings is not healthy. Most toppings are made of sugar and don’t add any nutritional value.

Too Much REALLY Isn’t Good

Ice cream has molecules in it that can defeat the messages in the brain that tell our stomach “OK, you’ve had enough.” A study by the UT (University of Texas) Southwestern Medical Center found that foods high in fat can send fatty acids to the brain that become resistant to insulin and leptin, two hormones that involve weight regulation. A way to combat that insatiable desire for ice-cream is to know how much to eat: 3 cups of dairy each day.

Yes. Some REALLY Does Have Seaweed In It.

Well, kind of. Technically, the substance used in some kinds of ice cream is called “agar” or “agar-agar.” The term comes from the Japanese word for “red algae.” Agar is widely used in a variety of processed foods as an emulsifier or a binding agent. Not every country or company uses agar. Some use carrageenans instead, which is made from certain red seaweeds…and some research suggests really isn’t good for you.
