Get a Healthy Heart!

The American Heart Association, the Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins and various online medical sources have trumpeted the best recommendations for a healthy heart and one of the leading suggestions is to eat more fruit and vegetables. No surprises here for many of us, but a reiteration of what we already know, “You are what you eat.” Consume healthy food choices and you will become healthier!

Which fruits and vegetables are best?

That’s easy: They’re all good! When you eat many different types of fruits and veggies, you get all the different types of nutrients your body needs to keep a healthy heart. The American Heart Association recommends filling at least half your plate with them to get to the recommended 5 cups of vegetables and 4 cups of fruits each day.

The good news is that all produce counts, which means canned, fresh, frozen and dried fruit varieties can help you reach your goal.

A healthy eating pattern is about smart choices.  The American Heart Association suggests these daily amounts.

  • Fruits – canned, dried, fresh & frozen; 4 servings or 2 cups
  • Vegetables – canned, dried, fresh & frozen; 5 servings or 2.5 cups

Food should give you energy– not weigh you down!

So, toss the excuses aside and run through some of the healthy, nutritious fruit and veggie items that you should be adding to the top of your grocery list.
