New Year’s Resolutions: How big is your commitment?

Did you make a New Year’s Resolution? Let’s Make this the Year to SUCCEED! NEW YEAR, NEW YOU!

Many of us make this annual pledge to ourselves; a promise to make better choices in the upcoming year. Usually health and weight loss rank among the most popular resolutions; we over-indulge during the holidays and try to get back on track with the New Year.

The beginning of a new year makes a great starting point to make changes, but we often find that MAKING the resolution is much easier than FOLLOWING the resolution.

Research has found that by the end of January over 30% of people have given up on their resolutions; and by June, over 50% will throw the towel in. In fact, many people actually make the same resolutions year after year; never achieving those goals. Why do you suppose so many fail? Some reasons could be lack of motivation, will power, and support. Or perhaps the goals we set are too unattainable? Whatever the reason, let’s not make those same mistakes again.

LET’S MAKE THIS THE YEAR!
Let’s do things different this time; let’s keep those resolutions! Just imagine reaching your goal this year and not having to make a resolution next year! Or, if you’re really motivated, make a different resolution.

Here are a few tips to help you keep your resolution:

1. Put it in writing: Write your goals on paper so it’s visible and available as a reminder and reference in moments of weakness. Be sure to include the reasons that you resolved to make those changes to place more emphasis on the importance of the goal. Keep a log to track performance and isolate triggers and temptations.
2. Break it up: If your goal seems too large or unattainable, break it up into smaller goals so they become more manageable. Trying to lose 30 pounds? If that seems overwhelming focus on losing 10 pounds at a time.
3. Celebrate! Be sure to celebrate and reward your success to stay motivated. Create reasonable rewards for yourself when you reach a milestone; ones that will not sabotage your efforts.
4. Connect: Team up with others who are trying to reach the same goals. Share tips, resources, and motivation.
